NATIONAL JUNIOR LEAGUE (2015/2016) LONDON NORTH

REPORT ON DAY 3 OF COMPETITION PLAYED ON SATURDAY 16th JANUARY 2016 AT ELLENBOROUGH TABLE TENNIS CLUB, ENFIELD, MIDDLESEX.

Division 1.

The decision to promote Graham Spicer to division 1 at the end of the first round robin proved fully justified as they were the only undefeated team at the end of day 3. Although all their four matches produced close scores they managed to come out on top in each case beating Barnet by 7-2, Chelmsford A by 6-3, Ellenborough A  by 5-4 and Fusion 1 by 6-3. This gave them a total of 24 points and a lead of just 1 point at the top of the table over  Chelmsford A, Ellenborough A and Fusion 1 who all won their remaining 3 matches and all ended equal second with 23 points apiece. Although the lead is a slender 1 point Graham Spicer are the only team to have played all their main rivals and look set to run away with the title on day 4. However with 3 teams just 1 point behind and yet to play each other it's going to be a right royal battle for the runner-up spot. Barnet were also beaten (unexpectedly?) by Warren Springs 6-3 but won their other two matches to take fifth place on 15 points while Mossford 1 were very narrowly defeated in all of their matches to take sixth place with 15 points. They are  followed by Warren Springs A on 11 and finally by Fusion 2 who were unfortunately reduced to two players for all their matches who are on 8 points.

Fraser Donnelly of Ellenborough A is still unbeaten after 19 matches  with  Daniel Berry of Chelmsford A winning 30 out of 31 on 97%. They are followed by Abdur Kelani of Fusion 1 on 85%, Jaycee Chan of Ellenborough A on 82% and Mahmood Kelani on 80%. The leading player of top team Graham Spicer is Asa Gauntlett on 75%.

Division 2.

Mossford 2 had two tough matches at the start of day 3 shading their first match 5-4 against BATTS B and then losing by the same score to the BATTS A team. But two whopping 9-0 wins against Warren Springs B and a one-man Ellenborough C team saw them finish the day at the top of the table with 27 points from their 4 matches.  BATTS B also lost 4-5 to their A team but also had two good wins by 8-1 against Warren Springs B and 7-2 against Chelmsford B which earned them second place in the table 4 points behind Mossford 2. Ellenborough continue to be plagued by absenteeism and Ellenborough B who had a bye in the first round had only 1 player available for their second round match against Chelmsford B and though Ray Yan managed to win his 3 matches they lost overall by 6-3. However with reinforcements in the afternoon including one promotion from the already hard-pressed C team they managed two 9-0 victories in the afternoon, one against the said C team and the other against Warren Springs B. This enabled them to claim third place with 21 points from their 3 matches.

BATTS A were the only unbeaten team on the day, winning 9-0 against Warren Springs B and beating two of the strongest teams, BATTS B and Mossford 2 both by the narrow margin of 5-4. They are handily placed with 19 points from their 3 matches. Chelmsford B were actually leading the table after two rounds having been gifted a walkover by the absent Ellenborough C team in their first round and by their 6-3 win over the weakened Ellenborough B team. But after a bye in the third round they were obviously lacking the competitive edge when they were beaten by BATTS B in their last match. They sit in fifth place on 17 points from their 3 matches. They are followed by warren Springs B with 1 point and finally the unfortunate Ellenborough C who had to give up one player to bolster the B team leaving them only one player available for their last two matches. They have no points from their 4 matches.

With the three teams below the top two all having a game in hand this could still turn out to be a five way fight for the top two places so day 4 could provide an exciting finish to the season.

With Graham Spicer promoted the Ellenborough B players are all unbeaten but have not played many matches. Of the rest Charlie Read and George Campbell of BATTS A lead the pack on 79% and 78% respectively. They are being chased by Charlotte Marsden of BATTS B on 77% followed by Mohammed Abdul Raqueeb of Mossford 2 on 74% and Joshua Ball also of Mossford 2 on 73%.
