Terrific Double for Super Sophie

Over the weekend of 25th-26th June in Preston, Sophie Chiang was entered into three National Tournaments.

Under 13 Girls (Saturday)

Seeded 6th, Sophie was upset by Isabella Hudson (Mi) and therefore finished second in her group. In the round of 16 Sophie had a 5 set win against Helena Dicken (Dy) coming from 2 down. In the quarter final Jasmine Wong (Y) seeded 1 beat Sophie 3 - 0 (4, 11 , 9). Jasmine went on to beat Darcie Proud (6, -8, 3, 2) in the Final

Under 11 Girls (Saturday)

In this competition Sophie seeded 1 topped her group beating, Anya Milne (Du) and Anna Green (Ng).

She had a bye in the round of 16 and comfortably beat Lucy Gent (Cv) 3-0 (2, 7, 4) in the quarter-final. Another good win in the Semi-Final 3-0 against Lola McGhee (Cv) 3-0 (4, 5, 3).

The Final was a differnet matter, as up against Amy Marriott (Y), Sophie edged the first 12-10 only for Amy to bounce back taking the next two 12-10, 11-7. Sophie just made it taking the 4th and 5th games 13-11 & 12-10.

Under 12 Girls (Sunday)

In the Under 12's Sophie was seeded 3 and won her group beating Amilia Barker (St), Mari Baldwin (Dv) and Isabel Webb (K).

Being seeded Sophie had a Bye in the round of 16. In the quarter-final Sophie played well to be beat Helena Dicken (Dy) in 4 after losing a close first game, the scores were -10, 12, 5, 5.

In the Semi-Final it looked all but up for Sophie trailling 2-0 to Anya Patel, she then staged a brilliant comeback taking the next 3 (7, 10, 5).

The Final in contrast was much more comfortable for Sophie beating Scarlett O'Neil (K) 3-0 (7, 9, 2). On the way to the final Scarlet beat Mari Baldwin (Dv) and Jasmine Williams (Ha).

Sophie said -

“I’m really, really proud of myself because I was 2-1 down against Amy and I was really nervous but in the end I got the gold medal.

“I just kept fighting and winning a national title is really good, it’s my best achievement.”

“In the under-12s, I didn’t really believe I could win it at the start but when I got to the semi-finals I thought I could do it.”
