Denise Payet Leads England Cadets to 5th Place in European Championships

England’s Cadet Girls notched two victories on day one of the Team competitions at the European Youth Championships.

Denise Payet, Charlotte Bardsley and Mollie Patterson combined in the 3-0 win over Latvia and they then came from 2-1 down to defeat Portugal 3-2, with Bardsley sealing it after Payet had won both her singles.

England then beat Norway to set up a play off match against Italy to see who progresses to the Positioanal Knock Out stage of the tournament.

Denise and Charlotte won one set each and combined to win the doubles to beat Italy 3 - 2.

The win over Italy set up a particularly tough looking match against 3rd seeds France. Denise and Charlotte once again combined to sink their opponents 3-1 on Sunday and set up a match against Slovenia in the next round of positional play-offs.

Payet started by coming from 1-0 and 2-1 down to defeat Camille Lutz, but Prithika Pavade defeated Bardsley in three to level the match score. A 3-1 doubles victory put England back in front and Payet again came from behind – this time 2-0 – to defeat Pavade 12-10 in the fifth and clinch England’s triumph.

However, they were unable to repeat the feat today as Slovenia registered a 3-0 victory, leaving England to fight for positions 5-8. They next play Germany later today.

Another fantastic 3 - 2 victory over Germany by Payet and Bardsley see them move into the Pos 5 - 6 playoff against Hungary.

Charlotte Bardsley won both her matches as England twice came from behind to claim a 3-2 victory over Germany to guarantee a top-six finish, with Denise Payet contributing the other win in the fourth match.

England Cadet Girls claimed a brilliant fifth-place finish at the European Youth Championships in Zagreb.

Mollie Patterson then joined Payet in the play-off for fifth and sixth against Hungary, with England again winning 3-2. The doubles proved the key as Payet & Patterson came from 2-1 down to seal it 13-11 in the fifth.

The players believe team-work and support were the keys to their success, having started the competition in the second tier.

Bardsley said: “The general aim was to try and top the group and get in the top division. Pulling together as a team helped us to fight through tough matches.”

Patterson added: “At the start we were just trying to play at our best, have good team spirit and gain promotion. A loud bench with good support helped our players against other strong countries”
